Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a mood disorder and the way a person interacts with others. The cause of BPD is unknown and is probably the result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Many people with BPD can benefit from psychological or pharmacological treatment, but no medications are currently licensed for the treatment of BPD. although the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines do not recommend medication, there is evidence that it may be helpful for some people with certain problems. Mood stabilizers or antipsychotics are sometimes prescribed to help with mood swings, reduce psychotic symptoms, or reduce impulsive behavior.

Pharmacological treatment of borderline personality disorder focuses on improving patients' self-control and quality of life by controlling symptoms such as emotional instability, depression, and anxiety. Commonly used medications include

  • Antidepressants, such as selective 5-hydroxytryptamine reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), 5-hydroxytryptamine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants.
  • Antipsychotics are used to control symptoms such as loss of emotional control and violent tendencies.
  • Mood stabilizers and anticonvulsants are used to treat the aggressive symptoms of BPD.

It is important to note that medication cannot be used as a treatment for borderline personality disorder alone and should be combined with psychotherapy to better improve the patient's symptoms and quality of life.

How Can We Help?

Given the limitations of current BPD pharmacotherapy, there is an urgent need to investigate potential new therapeutic targets, including neuropeptides such as opioids and vasopressins, as well as drugs designed to improve the biological effects of early life stress. Ace Therapeutics provides anti-BPD drug development services, such as pressin antagonists, brain opioids, and histone deacetylase inhibitor development.

In addition, we provide neurobiological research services for BPD. Because the neurobiological mechanism of BPD is not fully understood, the results of various studies show that the disease is closely associated with various factors (genetic, environmental, neurotransmitters, etc.). We can help you explore the interaction between these factors in depth through neuroimaging techniques, electrophysiological analysis, and molecular biology analysis to facilitate the development and application of more precise and effective treatments.

Related Services

Ace Therapeutics can provide a variety of R&D services to help you achieve breakthroughs in anti-BPD drug development. If you are interested in our services, please make an inquiry to learn how we can support you in your project.
